Building a birdhouse is an activity that includes many steps such identifying the need, designing a plan, deciding what materials and tools to use, and creating and testing prototypes.  This assessment aims to demonstrate student understanding of basic design processes and approaches which are applied in a real life context.

Objectives:

Students will be able to:

  • Describe properties of materials used and why they are good for building a birdhouse.

  • Select and use a variety materials based on purpose.

  • Understand the relationship between materials and tools.

  • Select and use a variety of appropriate tools in a safe and responsible manner.

  • Develop a plan for a birdhouse.

  • Create and test birdhouse prototype.

  • Finalise design ideas and build a birdhouse from a selection of materials.
