Objectives:         Students will be able to understand that materials are suitable for making a particular object because of their properties.

 

Teaching and learning sequence:

  • Activate prior knowledge - everyday materials - what are they made of?

  • Class discussion and revisit word wall of vocabulary - why are certain materials used for certain purposes?

  • Story - The true story of the Three Little Pigs.

  • Discuss - building materials - what worked, what didn’t, why?

  • Group work - photo of object and students to predict what object is, what it made of and why  the materials used for that object (Worksheet 1).

  • Discuss ideas - whole class.

  • Watch video - First the Base, then the Frame.  Follow - Things to think about.

  • Discuss video - materials, design and tools used.

  • Individual work - Draw a picture of a house and label materials used.

  • Reflection - recap of vocabulary, new learnings and understandings
