Objectives:         Students will be able to recognise simple properties of materials, such as strength, flexibility, transparency, hardness, elasticity.

Teaching and learning sequence:

  • Activate prior knowledge - everyday materials - what are they made of?

  • Class discussion and word wall of vocabulary - type of material .

  • Watch video on properties of materials.

  • Class discussion - how to describe materials - strong, waterproof, flexible, hard, soft, etc.  Enhance word wall.

  • Group work - select a material and identify characteristics of materials - describing words.

  • Discuss words and identify meaning.  Dictionary activity & interactive.

  • CFU:  Game -  Cards around room (eg: waterproof, flexible, strong, transparent - see Game Cards resource).   Teacher describes characteristic.  Students move to correct characteristic.

  • Group work - Predict and test certain materials for strength, flexibility, waterproof, transparency (See Worksheet).

  • Reinforce & CFU - interactive game.

  • Reflection - recap of vocabulary, new learnings and understandings
