Objectives:         Students use a guide to translate written messages into Morse code and to translate coded messages into written form.

  • What you're listening for is a combination of dots and dashes (also referred to as dits and dahs). A dit is a short beep, while a dah is a longer beep (three times longer). Every letter is separated by a short pause, and every word is separated by a longer pause (three times longer).

  • Morse Code Alphabet

  • Practice code with taps, claps, dit/dahs, lights, writing

  • Activity 1 = students complete worksheet to decipher morse code messages.

  • Activity 2 = groups play a game - scavenger hunt around the classroom using morse code clues developed by other groups.

  • Activity 3 =  Partner work = students write their own sentence in code and have their partner decipher the message.

Differentiation:   Allow extra time for students.  Mixed groupings to collaborate understandings.  VAK strategies.
