Objectives:         Students will be able to understand how design ideas are transitioned from idea to product by developing plans and selecting appropriate materials and tools.

Teaching and learning sequence:

  • Activate prior knowledge - everyday materials - what are they and what do we use them for?

  • Class discussion and revisit word wall of vocabulary - why are certain materials used for certain purposes?

  • Stimulus picture 1 - birdhouse.  Discussion about the materials used, why, tools, plans.  Develop concept map.

  • Stimulus website - basic plan design of a birdhouse.  Discuss the features, what materials, tools, etc required.  What do plans tell us?

  • Demonstrate putting together a cardboard prototype of a birdhouse according to a design plan.

  • Group work - each group given design plan and build their own cardboard prototype.

  • Group work - each group given a different birdhouse stimulus picture.  Groups to list materials, tools and draw a design plan of the birdhouse.

  • Groups to work with newspaper and cardboard to see if they can replicate the birdhouse.

  • Discuss group findings with whole class - what worked, what didn’t, why, improvements.

  • Reflection - recap of vocabulary, new learnings and understandings
