Objectives: Students will be able to understand how design ideas are transitioned from idea to product by developing plans and selecting appropriate materials and tools.
Teaching and learning sequence:

Activate prior knowledge - everyday materials - what are they and what do we use them for?

Class discussion and revisit word wall of vocabulary - why are certain materials used for certain purposes?

Stimulus picture 1 - birdhouse. Discussion about the materials used, why, tools, plans. Develop concept map.

Stimulus website - basic plan design of a birdhouse. Discuss the features, what materials, tools, etc required. What do plans tell us?

Demonstrate putting together a cardboard prototype of a birdhouse according to a design plan.

Group work - each group given design plan and build their own cardboard prototype.

Group work - each group given a different birdhouse stimulus picture. Groups to list materials, tools and draw a design plan of the birdhouse.

Groups to work with newspaper and cardboard to see if they can replicate the birdhouse.

Discuss group findings with whole class - what worked, what didn’t, why, improvements.

Reflection - recap of vocabulary, new learnings and understandings
