Content Descriptions

  • Year 3-4 Technology / Design and Technology / Processes and Production Skills

Select and use materials, components, tools, equipment and techniques and use safe work practices to make designed solutions (ACTDEP016).

  • Year 3-4 Technology / Design and Technology / Knowledge and Understanding

Investigate the suitability of materials, systems, components, tools and equipment for a range of purposes (ACTDEK013).

  • Year 4 Science / Science Understanding / Chemical Sciences

Natural and processed materials have a range of physical properties that can influence their use (ACSSU074).

General capabilities

  • Literacy:  Comprehend texts through listening and viewing, build vocabularly knowledge, creating oral and visual texts, and using language and texts to communicate design ideas.

  • Numeracy:  Recognising and understanding the role of number and measurement in design.

  • Critical and Creative thinking:  Identifying, exploring and organising information and ideas.  Posing questions, consider alternatives, seek solutions and put ideas into action.  Justify ideas and choices, and reflect on processes.

  • ICT capability:  Use ICT effectively and appropriately to access information and practice curriculum skills.

Cross Cultural Priorities

  •  Sustainability:  Generate ideas and solutions that consider the environment.

Objectives

This resource aims to provide teachers with a unit overview designed to scaffold understanding of concepts, skills and processes regarding materials, usage, tools and design.  Students will be able to:

  • Identify properties of materials and ascertain suitability for a purpose.

  • Identify tools and equipment required to design and create a solution.

  • Plan, design and create a solution to a problem.

Differentiation:

  • Modification of Content = Inclusion of Visual Auditory, Kinaesthetic activities for VAK learners; Variety of texts; Integrate higher order thinking; Opportunities to model/demonstrate information in varied ways; Incorporate of real world application.

  • Modification of Process = Explicit teaching; Scaffolding; VAK activities; Group work mixed abilities for collaborative learning; vary task completion times; Options to reduce/increase activity workload.

  • Modification of Product = Reflection - learners can express what they have learned in various ways; assessment - can vary in degree of complexity to match learners; variety of products to reflect learnings.

Safety

Teachers need to identify safety issues and conduct risk assessments.  For this resource, teachers should:

  •  refer to workplace health and safety policy pertaining to schools.

  •  ensure that students wear personal protective equipment where applicable.

  •  ensure safe handling practices are exercised with tools and materials selected.
