Objectives:         Students will be able to understand the relationship of tools and materials and how design templates are used for making a particular object.

Teaching and learning sequence:

  • Activate prior knowledge - everyday materials - what are they and what do we use them for?

  • Class discussion and revisit word wall of vocabulary - why are certain materials used for certain purposes?

  • Stimulus video - paper planes.  Discussion about the materials used, why, tools, plans.

  • Demonstrate putting together a basic paper plane and flying.  Class discussion on what materials, tools, design used.  Did it work?  Why/why not?  Suggested improvments - materials, tools, design?

  • Group work - online research on paper plane designs.

  • Groups to work with different materials to design their best paper plane - Criteria = fly the longest distance.

  • Design, Predict, Test, Improve.

  • Whole class paper plane flying contest.

  • Discuss activity with whole class - what worked, what didn’t, why, possible improvements, other factors?

  • Reflection - recap of vocabulary, new learnings and understandings
